In which I thank my neighbors for growing such crazy-ass plants in their front yards

by Susan Harris on August 18, 2011

Seen today in just one block of town, just around the corner from me.

See how nicely tied-up these sunflowers are?  Pedestrians can just enjoy them, not have to fight their way through them.

Look how much gorgeousness and food for pollinators these neighbors pack into a planting strip along their driveway!

Next, a whole lotta impact in a small but prominent spot.

And every year, neighbors enjoy the long-lasting blooms of crape myrtle in front of this perfectly matched house.

Thank you, gardeners of Takoma Park.

I love those sunflowers! If you are lucky and happen by at just the right moment, a huge bunch of canary birds will fly up out of the garden as you walk past. Looks like the flowers are taking flight!

So fun to revisit your neighborhood in this series of photos, Susan! You are lucky to live in such a garden-loving place.

What a nice tour of your neighborhood!

A few of my neighbors are beginning to grow more. Still, a whole lotta mowing going on since everyone has a meadow that “must be kept mowed below nine inches.” Most are cutting walking paths around the edges and letting the grass grow until it hits the covenant rule. Still, I’m seeing fewer butterflies this year. Two years of 100 degree temps and drought are also part of the problem.

Your lucky to live in such a neighborhood – only wish my neighbors were so conscientious when it comes to garden care – at least I don’t have to look at theirs when I’m sat in mine :)
